Katarina

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Katarina is a character who appeared regularly for several weeks in season 3 of the long-running series, Doctor Who. In the 1965 story "The Myth Makers," the Doctor, Steven and Vicki visited the beseiged city of Troy in 1184 BC. Vicki quickly developed a relationship with Trojan soldier Troilus and decided to stay behind. Steven and the Doctor, however, found themselves desperately trying to escape from the clutches of both armies. When Steven was injured in a fight with a Achilles, Katarina, then a handmaiden of the prophetess Cassandra, helped to drag him into the TARDIS. Now having both himself and Steven on board, the Doctor seized the opportunity to leave ancient Turkey. Katarina was still on board.

As played by actress Adrienne Hill, Katarina was, to say the least, unprepared to deal with her sudden exposure to radically advanced alien technology and the universe outside of ancient Troy. Much to the Doctor's annoyance, she chose instead to believe that she had died and that the Doctor was a god transporting her to the next life.

Katarina had a relatively short tenure on the TARDIS. In episode 4 of her second story The Daleks Master Plan, she was held hostage by an escaped convict from a nearby prison planet. She ended up sacrificing herself to prevent the Doctor from giving into the convict's demands. As such, the character remains significant to the series history as the first of the Doctor's companions to die during their adventures.
