Before the Cylon Attack

Kara had a difficult childhood, raised by an abusive mother, Socrata, who believed she was special and prepared her for her destiny with painful lessons. These lessons helped form her character and caused her to expect a painful life . She has had all her fingers broken on both hands which the Cylon doctor Simon theorized was done intentionally by someone when she was young and as a result may have resulted in her reticence towards having children of her own. This analysis was poorly received by Kara. Kara's mother slammed a door shut on her hands as punishment for a prank Kara played on her. Kara, out of revenge for the emotional and physical abuse she endured, had capitalized on her mother's intense fear of bugs and scattered rubber bugs over her mother's shoes.

Kara's initial career goal was to be a professional Pyramid ball player. When her knee gave out, she joined the military and proved herself as a brilliant pilot and a flight instructor at the Colonial Flight School. Her mother proved less than impressed believing she should have graduated at the top of her class instead of 16th of a class of 117. At the time Kara announced her graduation, Kara's mother revealed she was dying of cancer, she rejected Kara's attempts to comfort her and Kara left angrily and never returned. Her mother died some months later ("Maelstrom").

It was as a flight instructor that she met and became involved with Zak Adama, son of Commander William Adama and brother of Lee Adama. The two fell deeply in love and intended to marry. Though he told her not to give him any special treatment, Kara passed him although he failed Basic Flight, not wanting to destroy his dream of following in his father's footsteps. Zak was killed on his first Viper mission and Kara met his father after the funeral. The two bonded over their love for Zak and Adama came to love Kara as his own daughter. Adama's other son, Lee, took the death of his brother hard blaming his father for his brother's death and broke contact with him and Kara.

Kara resigned from her job as an instructor and became an operational pilot on board Galactica. She served there for two years and found herself often in conflict with XO Saul Tigh. She had no respect for his alcoholism and he in turn had no patience for her hotheaded behavior and disrespect for authority. She was sent to the brig for punching Tigh in the face after he upturned a card table during a game in which she taunted him about the state of his marriage. Tigh promised to end her career but his threat was wasted as the Cylons shortly attacked the Twelve Colonies and the fleet needed its best pilot. She later made an attempt to apologize but Tigh brushed off her apology stating that her flaws were professional whereas his were personal.

After the Cylon Attack

Kara reunited with Lee Adama when he was stationed aboard the Galactica following the Cylon attacks. She confessed to him the mistake she made regarding Zak. Though he was initially devastated, he manged to get past it and forced her to confront her reservations about training new pilots because of her part in Zak's death. Kara initially failed the pilots for small errors, after their first training. Her decision forced her to admit to Commander Adama what she had done for Zak and he was extremely angry. The two finally mended their relationship after Kara's viper went down on a moon and he realized how important she was to him. ("You Can't Go Home Again").

While recovering from damage sustained to her knee while downed on the moon, and unable to fly, Kara was asked to interrogate Cylon prisoner Leoben Conoy. She resorted to extreme measures to gain information from him. Conoy seemed to have an unusual interest in Kara and managed to trigger an emotional reaction from her. Following his execution, she prayed to the gods for his soul, should he have one. Kara would later reunite with Conoy when he held her captive on New Caprica forcing her to endure a contrived domesticity believing their destinies to be tied and that she would come to love him. Kara killed him several times.

Kara has some faith in the gods, which was evidenced when President Laura Roslin requested that she return to Cylon-occupied Caprica to retrieve the Arrow of Apollo which, according to scripture, would point the way to Earth. While on Caprica she reunited with Helo and was disappointed to discover him with the Cylon, Sharon. She also met Pyramid ball player Samuel Anders and fought with his resistance team. She was injured and captured by the Cylons and taken to an egg farm where the Cylons hoped to create a human-cylon hybrid. One of her ovaries was removed before she escaped, a fact she discovered later ("The Farm"). Leoben Conoy used this information to convince her that a child, Kacey, had been created from her ovaries. This later proved to be false. Kara escaped Caprica with Sharon and Helo and the Arrow of Apollo, forced to leave behind Anders and the resistance with a promise to return and rescue them.

Her request to return and rescue the resistance and the man she fell in love with was denied and Starbuck became depressed and overwhelmed with guilt for breaking her promise. Lee Adama was overjoyed to have Thrace back on Galactica and admitted to her that he loved her though the admission was impulsive and not definitively romantic, and resulted in teasing from Kara.

When the Battlestar Pegasus joined the fleet, Admiral Helena Cain reassigned Kara to Pegasus. Kara secretly engaged in a mission using the new ship Blackbird to snap recon photos of a Cylon Resurrection Ship. The successful mission lead to her promotion to Captain and Pegasus CAG. Commander Adama later requested that Kara assassinate Cain following the mission to destroy the Cylon vessel. Kara was fearful of the assignment but intended to do her duty. Fortunately, the order was never given.

Starbuck developed a rivalry with pilot Kat for the honor of "top gun." Still depressed about being unable to rescue Anders, Kara began to drink heavily and developed an obsession with the Cylon raider, Scar. She eventually came to her senses and worked with Kat to take the raider out and allowed Kat to take top honors. Not long after, Kara, while on leave aboard the Cloud Nine, attempted to gather intelligence on a hostage situation. A firefight ensued and Kara accidentally shot Lee. During his recovery she found he was comforted by Dualla. Kara later returned to Galactica and took Lee's old job as the ship's CAG.

Season 3

Kara eventually got approval for the mission to rescue the resistance members on Caprica. She managed to successfully rescue Anders and his men. Her celebration on Galactica caused a rift between her and Lee that was only mended when the fleet decided to settle on New Caprica. On the night of the founding, she and Lee slept together and admitted their love for each other. Oddly, the next morning, she married Anders. Lee was angry and their relationship fell apart. Lee then married Dualla.

Kara and Anders settled on New Caprica and her boisterous nature was tempered. A year later however, the Cylons arrived and occupied the planet. Kara was imprisoned by Conoy, who attempted to make her fall in love with him and convert her to monotheism. He also convinced her that Kacey was their child created from her stolen ovary. ("Occupation", "Precipice ").

Following the rescue of New Caprica, Kara was devastated to realize that the child Conoy convinced her was hers was the daughter of a colonist he had abducted. Readjusting to life on Galactica proved difficult and she was recruited as a juror in "The Circle", a committee formed to judge and execute those believed to be guilty of treason and collaboration with the Cylons. Their duties nearly led to the execution of Felix Gaeta. The fact that Gaeta turned out to be an aid to the resistance cause Kara to doubt her role.

Kara and Lee's relationship became even more dramatic. She challenged him to a brutal boxing match that eventually led to their working out their emotional issues. Unfortunately, their increasingly intense relationship damaged the relationships with their respective spouses. The two engaged in an affair but Lee eventually determined he would no longer cheat on his wife and Kara refused to divorce Anders on religious grounds. Facing the end of his marriage, Lee recommitted himself to Dualla.

In "Maelstrom", Kara began experiencing dreams and hallucinations focusing on the mandala from the temple on the algae planet. Kara had been drawing the same image since she was a child and the similarity between paintings in her apartment and the mandala artifact retrieved from the temple, was pointed out by Helo.

Kara saw hallucinations of herself as a child and had several flashbacks to her difficult childhood with her mother. She also had erotic dreams of herself and Leoben. Lee, Kara, and Hotdog cruised the atmosphere of a nearby gas giant while the fleet refueled. Kara became convinced she saw a Cylon Raider and risked her life trying to track it down though there was no evidence of it on DRADIS and no one else saw it. Following the incident, Lee and Adama questioned her suitability to fly and Lee was extremely worried about her.

Kara visited an Oracle who recited the same words Leoben used during her interrogation of him. ("Flesh and Bone"). Kara was unnerved by the experience and seemed to be having a breakdown, and told Lee that she didn't trust herself to fly again. He promised to back her up and the two went out again and Kara saw the raider again. Kara followed the phantom raider down into a funnel resembling the Eye of Jupiter and experienced another hallucination of her mother and Leoben. Leoben helped her make peace with her choice and stop fearing death. Her Viper burned up in the planet's atmosphere with no sign of her having ejected.

Season 4

Kara returned to Galactica in the season 4 opener, claiming to have seen Earth. Though Lee and Sam greeted her warmly, everyone else was suspicious of her mysterious resurrection believing she may be a cylon. Though she claimed to have taken photographs of Earth, her viper, appeared brand new and contained no navigational data. Unwilingly to put her trust in Kara, the president resumed their intended course, rather than trust Kara's claims that they were going the wrong way and was losing her intuitive grasp on the direction as they moved farther away from the correct course.

Quotes

"It means that you're still acting like you're everyone's best friend. We're not friends. You're the CAG. "Be careful out there"? Our job isn't to be careful, it's to shoot Cylons out of the frakkin' sky! "Good hunting" is what you say. And now one of your idiot pilots is acting like a child and refusing to take her pills. So she either says "Yes, sir" and obeys a direct order, or you smack her in the mouth, and you drag her sorry ass down to sick bay, and you make her take those pills!"

"So life's a bitch. What do you want to do, cry about it? "

Apollo' Adama: So... um... that bum knee of yours is looking pretty good. And the other one's not too bad either.

Starbuck: Lee, if you want to ask me to dance, just ask.

Apollo' Adama: You want to dance?

Starbuck: Me in a dress is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
