K. W. Jeter (Kevin Wayne Jeter) (b, 1950) was born in Los Angeles and started reading science fiction and suspense novels at an early age. While others in class were reading the “acknowledged” classics, Jeter wrote his book reports on novels by authors such as Philip K. Dick and Robert Sheckley. He attended college at Cal State Fullerton in the late 1960s and early ’70s, graduating with a degree in sociology. He completed his first novel, Dr. Adder in 1972. Soon afterwards he met Tim Powers and another budding writer, James Blaylock. When one of Jeter’s professors showed the manuscript of Dr. Adder to Philip K. Dick, the author liked it but suspected that Jeter was actually a government agent. Consequently, they broke off personal contact until 1976. Jeter went on to write such SF novels as Seeklight, The Dreamfields, Glass Hammer, Death Arms, Farewell Horizontal, Madlands andNoir, plus the Victorian fantasies Morlock Night and Infernal Devices. He is also the author of the highly original horror novels Soul Eater, Dark Seeker, Mantis, In the Land of the Dead, The Night Man and Wolf Flow. These days, Jeter is better known for his media tie-ins and novelizations, including two Alien Nation and two Star Trek: Deep Space Nine books, a Star Wars trilogy (“The Bounty Hunter Wars”) and three sequels to Dick’s Blade Runner and the “director’s cut” of the film.
