Justice League is an animated TV series based on the DC Comics team of superheroes Justice League. The series aired on Cartoon Network premiering on November 17, 2001. At the outset if the third season, the series was retitled Justice League Unlimited.

The producers of this series took a serious look at the Justice League comic book, and really tried to do something special. The intial team was Superman, Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman, the John Stewart Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Hawkgirl. After a rocky first year, and criticism by fans that "Superman" was portrayed as a "wimp", they did a story where Superman fought the villain Darkseid of the New Gods hand to hand in a knock down drag out battle. The series got more interesting from there. In the third season they expanded things, and employed almost every superhero character DC Comics had in their stable, in more and more complex story arcs. This allowed some of DC's lesser known heroes (like the Question, Huntress, and even Sgt Rock) to have prominent roles in some episodes
