Dr. Julian Bashir is a fictional character in the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine played by Alexander Siddig. Bashir is a medical doctor and Starfleet Officer born on Earth in 2341 to Richard and Amsha Bashir. His character was vain and naive, and as such was often a source of humor. Still, he carried on effectively and dramatically, in the tradition of Star Trek doctors.
His first posting as a Star Fleet officer was as Chief Medical Officer at Deep Space Nine, a Federation run space station orbiting the planet Bajor. Bashir is a brave, brilliant, handsome medical officer, and knows it. He enjoys talking, particularly about himself. He had romantic ideas about being stationed "out in the wilderness", which was an attitude the Bajoran natives found insulting.
Bashir sees himself as a bit of a lady's man. He often regaled attractive women with tales about himself. He was immediately attracted to Jadzia Dax, the station's Science Officer, who did not return his feelings. He eventually made peace with the fact that he would have to settle for being "just friends" with her. Still, he was very melancholly at her wedding.
He developed a close friendship with Miles O'Brien, a plain spoken soldier and technical wizard, who found Bashir quite annoying at first. The two are definitely a case study of how opposites can sometimes become friends. The two enjoyed participating in historical holosuite adventures. Holosuites were chambers capable of producing realistic hologram character and places, so that people can have experience being somewhere and interracting with people for recreational or training purposes. They often spent time together at the local salloon playing darts, building models, and pursuing various sports and hobbies.
He was also a conspiracy theorist, and had a lot of romantic ideas about the espionage business. He often had lunch with Garak, the only Cardassian resident left on the station when the Cardassian occupation of Bajor ended. He imagined that the tailor Garak was really a Cardassian spy, and Garak enjoyed hinting to him and giving him clues as to his present and past exploits. It did turn out that Garak had a background in espionage, but that he was in exile because of it, and so was actually spying for no one.
Bashir hid a secret for most of his life. His many talents were actually a result of illegal genetic enhancement. Bashir was not a bright child with learning difficulties. His parents secretly sought out illegal genetic enhancement treatments for their son resulting in increased intelligence, hand-eye coordination, reflexes, vision, stamina, and height. Genetic enhancement is illegal in the United Federation of Planets, and when this was discovered his father had to serve a prison sentence.
Once Miles found out about his genetic enhancement, he felt a little better about Julian always beating him at things. From then on, he always made him play against him with a handicap.
Bashir was a dedicated and brilliant doctor, despite his flaws. He came through for the station crew and the ill on distant planets again and again.
