Though Dan's frequent time jumps initially appear random it soon becomes clear that he is being guided to help specific people and jumps to various points in their lives. His interference typically affects a positive change in the present. Dan is unable to control the jumps and goes missing for hours or days in the present on each jump, returning long after he left in random locations.
Though his missions in the past were a definite focus, so were Dan's relationships, particularly those with his wife and brother. Dan's brother, a police officer, initially suspected his brother's past addiction to gambling had resurfaced and was responsible for his frequent disappearances. Jack eventually came to believe, his brother was being honest about traveling through time, particularly after coming across Livia, whom he had believed dead in a plane crash several years before.
