History
Jonas first appeared in the episode "Meridian." When SG-1 visited Langara, they found a civilization only a few decades behind Earth in technological development. The Kelownans were engaged in a Cold War with their neighboring countries and were testing a radioactive isotope of naquadria in the first step towards the creation of a nuclear weapon. Jonas was introduced as the adviser to the Kelownan High Minister. Jonas led SG-1 on a tour of their test project. When an accident occurred in the lab, Daniel Jackson saved Jonas and the lives of the Kelownans by risking his own to prevent an explosion. Daniel received a lethal dose of radiation, but instead of being grateful, the Kelownans made him the scapegoat for their failures, claiming he attempted to sabotage the project.
In his short time with Daniel and SG-1, Jonas came to see things their way. Realizing the naquadria weapon was as dangerous as SG-1 warned, he told his government the truth about Daniel's involvement and stole a sample of naquadria to give to the SGC. Unable to return home, Jonas defected and was allowed to remain at the SGC.
With the loss of Daniel on his conscience, Jonas was determined to make amends and offered his skills to the SGC. He devoted his time to studying Daniel's work as well as all information available on the base. He petitioned repeatedly for a position on SG-1, but Jack O'Neill refused.
The naquadria Jonas stole made it possible for the Air Force to build the X-302 and Jonas's first trip outside the base was to visit the test site at Peterson Air Force Base. The naquadria proved too unstable for successful use of the hyperdrive engines. When Anubis later attacked the Stargate with a weapon of Ancient design, Jonas's simple idea of moving the Stargate proved to be the solution to the problem. The X-302 was used to transport the gate outside the solar system, where it exploded. Shortly after, when faced with the alternative of allowing a Russian member on SG-1, Jack reconsidered and Jonas joined SG-1.
SG-1
Jonas immediately formed a connection with Samantha Carter and shared Teal'c's perspective as an alien living on Earth. Winning Jack over was a much more difficult task and Jonas worked hard to prove himself. Jonas also had his own doubts about his own abilities when he froze on a mission while under attack. Determined not to stand idly by and let someone else save the day for a third time, Jonas risked his life to help rescue the rest of the team from a Goa'uld mother ship trapped at the bottom of the ocean.
In the episode "Shadow Play," several Kelownans visited Earth. One of them, his former professor, led Jonas to believe in a conspiracy to overthrow the Kelownan government. Jonas investigated his claims, only to discover his professor was schizophrenic; a result of long-term exposure to naquadria radiation.
In Stargate SG-1 episode "Metamorphosis," SG-1 was imprisoned by followers of the Goa'uld Nirrti. Nirrti placed them all inside an Ancient DNA Resequencer, manipulating their genes as she had done with her mutated followers. Nirrti was particularly impressed by Jonas's DNA, and implied he was different from the others, more advanced. Despite showing no initial symptoms of Nirrti's meddling, Jonas later began to see prophetic visions of the near future. The visions were connected to a fast growing but benign brain tumor. Jonas tried to help SG-1 using his new abilities, but was eventually overwhelmed by the effects of the tumor and successfully underwent surgery to remove it, and his abilities with it.
In the episode "Full Circle," SG-1 discovered a tablet that told of a lost city. Jonas devoted his time to discovering the city's location, which brought the team to an ancient city where they discovered Daniel Jackson back in human form and missing all his memories. When Daniel regained some of his memories, he and Jonas went on a mission to infiltrate Anubis's ship and destroy his super weapon. Jonas was captured and, using a mind probe, Anubis discovered Langara and naquadria.
Baal soon arrived to battle Anubis, distracting him from Langara. A small battle also ensued on Kelowna and Jonas was injured by a staff blast while saving Daniel's life. He gained Jack's respect, the respect of his people, and completed his journey with SG-1. Jonas decided to return to Langara as an ambassador of peace between the nations of his planet.
Jonas returned to the SGC in the episode "Fallout," when it was discovered the naquadria bomb test performed by the Kelownans would ultimately lead to the destruction of the planet. With the help of SG-1, and Kelownan scientist Kianna (who proved to be a Goa'uld), Jonas was able to save his home planet.
Memorable Quotes
I really don't know what was worse—seeing my colleagues die in the manner they did . . . or seeing the looks of utter glee on our leaders' faces when they were told the potential power of this weapon.
Not a day goes by when I don't think about what happened. I stood by and watched while he saved my people from disaster. It should have been me who jumped through the glass, disarmed the device, and he's gone because I didn't. You have to live with that and so do I.
Carter arrives to see Jonas having burgers, fries, and a milkshake for lunch.
Carter: Nice . . . lunch.
Jonas: Mmmm. I'm really starting to enjoy this traditional American food.
Carter: We have another tradition. It's called hardened arteries.
Jonas: Still, I'm usually much better at reading people.
Chekov: Major! Why was I not informed about the X302?
Jonas: For example, it might not be that obvious to everyone, but this man is actually very upset.
