Johnny Weissmuller

<span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>

Johnny Weissmuller (June 2, 1904 Freidorf, Banat, Romania (Austria-Hungary at the time) - January 20, 1984) was a Romanian actor.

"Me Tarzan, you Jane."

The five-gold medal winning Olympic swimmer got the part of Tarzan after he was seen working out in a hotel swimming pool. His interpretation of the character: unmarred body, swinging from vine to vine, limited grasp of English, his yodeling yell (yes, that was him, despite studio publicity to the contrary) became the popular concept. Even though this was at considerable variance with Edgar Rice Burroughs' books, he is what most people think of when they think of Tarzan.

Maybe that's not a surprise, given twelve starring movie appearances in the role. The initial two movies were aimed at an adult audience, although they became tamed down after that. When Tarzan wound down for him, he began another series as Jungle Jim, a very different character. Even though he made more Jungle Jim movies, they never had the cultural impact of his Lord of the Apes.
