John Joseph Travolta (February 18, 1954 Englewood, New Jersey - ) is an American actor born to Helen and Salvatore Travolta. Although he came to fame in Welcome Back, Kotter and Saturday Night Fever, Travolta has done his share of Sci Fi fare. In recent years his devotion to Scientology, like fellow church member Tom Cruise, has been a focus of some attention. Travolta is married to actress Kelly Preston and they have two children.

Travolta's mother enrolled him in a New York drama school after seeing him in a local production of Who'll Save the Plowboy?. He studied dance and acting and landed his first professional job in a summer production of the misical Bye Bye Birdie. He quit school at sixteen to pursue a professional career in New York.He appeared in commercials and on stage. From Ne York he moved to Hollywood, where he landed minor roles on TV series. He returned to New York to star in the musical Grease on Broadway at 18. He followed up with Over Here before returning to Hollywood for better roles. Shortly after filming Devil's Rain in Mexico, he returned to California to audition for the sitcom Welcome Back Kotter. He landed the role of Vinnie Barbarino which he played for the series' four seasons.

Travolta's breakout role came with Saturday Night Fever and he followed up with the film version of Grease, Urban Cowboy and the Saturday Night Fever sequel, Staying Alive. He appeared with Grease co-star Olivia Newton John in the romantic fantasy Two of a Kind. It was his first time playing an Angel and he would do so again in 1996's Michael, a completely different take on that subject. The role marked his transition to comedic roles such as Look Who's Talk and Look Who's Talking Now.

Travolta fell out of popularity in the 90s but Quentin Tarrantino resurrected his career with Pulp Fiction. Other notable roles include Phenomenon in which he played a man granted impressive psychic abilities after being struck by lightning, Michael as the unexpected and unimpressive archangel, Face/Off alongside Nicholas Cage playing both hero and villain and Primary Colors as a thinly disguised variation on Bill Clinton as a presidential candidate.

In the 21st century he appeared in several dramatic films, The General's Daughter, Basic,Swordfish Domestic Disturbance and Ladder 49. His most notorious film was the 2000 science fiction film Battlefield Earth based on Scientology creator L. Ron Hubbard's novel. The film was panned by critics and failed at the box office and earned the film, Travolta and the films director Razzie Awards.

Travolta had better luck with the 2007 musical remake Hairspray in which he dressed up as a woman to play Edna Turnblad. Recent and upcoming roles include the film version of the series Dallas, Old Dogs with Robin Williams and Seth Green, and the animated film Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey.
