John Nathan-Turner (August 12, 1947 Birmingham, England – May 1, 2002) was a British television producer.
He was associated with Doctor Who for many years, having begun as a floor assistant on the 1969 serial "The Space Pirates." He became a production unit manager starting with the show's 14th season and ascended to producer starting with season 18 (1980). He would remain the show's producer until it was put on hiatus in 1989.
While producer, Nathan-Turner made himself very accessible to both the press and fans of the program, consenting to many interviews and many appearances at fan conventions. This very public persona often caused fans to ascribe both the show's successes and its failures directly to him. Decades after his departure from the show, he is still reviled by many fans and beloved by many others.
Additional reason for the strong feelings among fans may be attributed to the fact that his era of the program was stylistically a very clean break from what had gone immediately before it. Nathan-Turner had very clear ideas about the direction in which he wanted to take the program and he carried them out immediately.
