John Gavin Malkovich (b. December 9, 1953 Christopher, Illinois) is a highly respected Academy Award-nominated American actor, producer, and director. Genre fans will remember Malkovich in a variety of roles including that of F.W. Murnau in Shadow of the Vampire, Dr. Jekyll and Edward Hyde in Mary Reilly and perhaps most notably, himself, in the award-winning film Being John Malkovich.
Malkovich's intellectual background is noticeable in his performances and choice of roles. He was born to Daniel Malkovich, a conservation magazine publisher, and Joe Anne, a newspaper owner. Though pudgy as a child, he transformed himself into a star athlete in high school. After high school he attended Eastern Illinois University. Inspired by his father's work, he sought to be a professional environmentalist. He was drawn to theatre however, and with fellow actor and friend Gary Sinise, founded Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater in 1976, and seven years later won an Obie Award for a production of Sam Shepard's True West, which played at Steppenwolf.
After several years in theater, he took on the world of film making his debut on television. He appeared on Broadway in Death of a Salesman which was turned into a television movie in 1985 for which he won an Emmy Award. Other early roles include other noteworthy films, The Killing Fields, the WWII drama Eleni, The Glass Menagerie and Empire of the Sun. Malkovich became known for his chilling performances and won acclaim and Osar and Golden Globe nominations for his role in the 1988 film, Dangerous Liaisons costarring Glen Close. Other sinister roles include Dr. Jekyll in Mary Reilly, with Julia Roberts, assassin Mitch Leary in In the Line of Fire, and the vile Gilbert Osmond in Portrait of a Lady starring Nicole Kidman. He won acclaim for his performance and followed up with Shadow of the Vampire, which documented the making of the F.W. Murnau horror classic, Nosferatu.
Malkovich varied roles dramatically, interspersing independent films with foreign and bigger Hollywood productions. He appeared in the action blockbuster Con Air in 1997 as the evil criminal Cyrus the Virus, a German production of Les Miserables in 2000, The libertine in 2004 and the fantasy film, Eragon in 2006.
Recent and upcoming roles include Gardens of the Night, In Tranzit, The Great Buck Howard, Beowulf, The Mutant Chronicles, Burn After Reading, Afterwards, and Love and Virtue.
