John Landis (b. 1950) American writer and director who started out working in the mail room at Twentieth Century-Fox. He played an ape in his first feature, Schlock (1972), before finding success with the comedies National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978) and The Blues Brothers (1980) and An American Werewolf in London (1981). An enthusiastic fan of the field, he often has cameo roles in other directors’ films and has recently made a career out of appearing in documentaries about the genre. His most successful work is probably the zombie dance video for Michael Jackson’s Thriller (1983).
