John Kessel (b. September 24, 1950 in Buffalo, New York) is an American author and professor. Kessel earned a B.A. in English and Physics from the University of Rochester in 1972, an M.A. in English from the University of Kansas in 1974, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Kansas in 1981. In 1979, Kessel began work as an editor for Commodity News Services in Leawood, Kansas. He moved on in 1982 and has since taught American literature, science fiction, fantasy, and fiction writing at North Carolina State University.
Kessel became a published author in 1978 when he contributed to Asimov's Science Fiction and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. He may be best known for his novella Another Orphan a fantasy work based on Moby Dick. Another Orphan won the 1982 Nebula Award. Kessel also won a 1992 Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for his short story "Buffalo" and a a Paul Green Playwright's prize in 1994 for his play "Faustfeathers".
Kessel's fist full length novel, Freedom Beach was published in 1985 and was co-authored with James Patrick Kelly. Other notable work includes Nebula Award finalist Good News From Outer Space (1989) and the time travel story Corrupting Dr. Nice.
