John Gilling

John Gilling (May 29, 1912 London, EnglandNovember 22, 1984) British writer and director who began his career in the late 1940s scripting the Burke and Hare-inspired The Greed of William Hart (1948) and such early Hammer thrillers as The Man in Black (1949) and Room to Let (1950). He directed Bela Lugosi in Mother Riley Meets the Vampire (1952) before moving on to more interesting projects like The Gamma People (1956) and The Flesh and the Fiends (1959). He later returned to Hammer to direct The Plague of the Zombies (1966), The Reptile (1966) and The Mummy’s Shroud (1967) before relocating to Spain, where he ended his career with the “Blind Dead” coda La Cruz del Diablo (1974).
