John Barrowman (March 11, 1967 Glasgow, Scotland - ) is a Scottish-born actor, singer and presenter who is most famous for his role as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who, and its spin-off Torchwood.
Career
Barrowman was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on March 11 1967. He moved to Joliet, Illnois at the age of nine where he learned to speak with an American accent in order to avoid bullying at school. He has dual US and UK citizenship. In 1985 he graduated from Joliet West High School, when he was at school he had won parts in several musical productions.
He has starred in many West End musical productions, for example he played Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, and has appeared in Anything Goes, Beauty and the Beast, Grease!, Hair, Matador, Miss Saigon. He has played the role of Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard in both the West End and on Broadway, and appeared in the Stephen Sondheim revue Putting It Together (1999-2002) on Broadway as well.
Television Presenting
John Barrowman was a co-presenter of the CBBC variety show Live & Kicking in 1990, he then went on to present children's gameshow The Movie Game. Later in the 1990s he was a co-presenter on Five's Company for Channel Five. In 2006 he appeared on ITV's morning magazine show This Morning.
He was one of the "Expert Panel" of judges on the BBC's musical talent show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? in 2006. He is set to present the "Red Carpet Highlights" of the BAFTA Film Awards in February 2006 on E! Entertainment Television with Ruby Wax. He will also guest present the BBC 2 Radio Show Elaine Paige on Sunday on February 11 and 18.
As a Contestant
Barrowman has appeared as a contestant in several "celebrity" game shows. He was a
contestant in the first series of ITV's Dancing on Ice' in 2006. He also has appeared in the panel shows Never Mind the Buzzcocks, 8 Out of 10 Cats and The Big Finish in 2006.
TV Roles
Barrowman starred in several TV series before playing his most famous role. He appeared as Peter Fairchild in the CBS soap Central Park West in 1996, and in 2000 he played Peter Williams in the NBC series Titans.
As Captain Jack Harkness
John Barrowman appeared in five episodes of Doctor Who in 2005 as Captain Jack Harkness, the intrepid trans-temporal con man beginning in "The Empty Child" and leaving in "The Parting of the Ways". He was going to appear in the 2006 series as well but was unable to due to scheduling conflicts, however he was given his own TV show Torchwood in 2006. He appeared in all 13 episodes of the first series of Torchwood and is set to appear in at least three episodes of Doctor Who in 2007.
Film Roles
His first film appearance was in an uncredited role in 1987's The Untouchables. He appears in the role of Ben Carpenter in the 2002 film Shark Attack 3: Megalodon. He had a small role as one of the Musical Performers in De-Lovely (2004), and as Lead Tenor (the Lead Stormtrooper) in the 2005 version of The Producers.
Personal life
Barrowman was joined in a civil partnership on December 27, 2006 to his long-time partner, architect Scot Gill, in a ceremony at St. David's Hotel and Spa in Cardiff, Wales. He was joined by both members of his own and his partner's families and by the regular cast of Torchwood, and also by Doctor Who and Torchwood show-runner Russell T. Davies.
