Joe Flanigan is an American actor best known for his role as Lt. John Sheppard on the TV series Stargate Atlantis. He was born in Los Angeles, California on January 5, 1967. He grew up on a ranch in Reno, Nevada and at age 14 attended a boarding school in Ojai, California, where he was introduced to acting in a school production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He attended the University of Colorado and majored in history and also studied in Paris, France. He continued to act while in college and appeared in the play Corianus.
Flanigan became a writer and worked in New York in magazine publishing. He also studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse and eventually moved to Los Angeles to become an actor. He guest-starred on several TV series, including Dawson's Creek, Cupid, Providence, Profiler and Tru Calling. He also played parts in the films The Force, The Other Sister, Thoughtcrimes, and Silent Men. In 2004, he took on the lead role of Lt. John Sheppard on Stargate Atlantis. He also wrote the episode "Epiphany" for the series.
Private Life
Flanigan is married to Katherine Kousi and the couple has two sons, Aidan and Truman. He enjoys skiing and has won prizes in the sport at the Waterkeepers' Alliance event in Lake Louise.
