Jo Grant is a character who appeared regularly in seasons 8 through 10 of the long-running series Doctor Who. At the beginning of season 8, the Doctor's assistant Dr. Elizabeth Shaw had departed, proclaiming that all the Doctor needed was someone to hand him the test tubes and tell him how wonderful he was. This left the Doctor's superiors at UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) with a position to fill.

After having completed some rudimentary training in intelligence methods, Jo (played by actress Katy Manning) used the influence of her uncle (apparently a government official of some sort) to get herself assigned to UNIT. Wide eyed, inexperienced and even somewhat ditzy, Jo seemed to fit the job description left by the Doctor's previous assistant quite well. So, she became the Doctor's new assisstant for the next three seasons of the show.

Cheery, enthusiastic and extremely friendly, Jo quickly endeared herself to the Doctor, to the UNIT staff and to audiences. Nevertheless, having quite a nack for getting herself into trouble, she proved to be a handfull.

In the season 10 closer, "The Green Death," Jo met and fell in love with Professor Clifford Jones, a young ecologist who was about to depart for the Amazon. Jo decided to accompany him, departing the Doctor's company.
