Jim Dale (b. August 15, 1925 Rothwell, Northamptonshire, England, UK) is an English actor, voice artist and songwriter. Dale's voice is well known to fans of the Harry Potter audio book series. He may also be remembered for his appearances in the Carry On film series.
As a child, Dale studied performance in the form of dance and music. He started his career as a stand-up comic. He honed his skills performing for his peers while in the army and after being discharged, pursued a career in comedy. He landed a job on a musical variety show which led to a successful recording career. He made his television debut on the BBC music show 6-5 Special. He was later asked to host Saturday Morning Children's Requests radio show for BBC Radio.
In the 60s, Dale took to the stage playing Autolycus in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale at the Edinburgh Festival. His career on the British Stage eventually led him to Broadway where he won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his role in the Cy Coleman musical, Barnum. In 1970, he joined The National Theatre in London at the request of Laurence Olivier. He appeared in numerous productions including the classics Love's Labout's Lost and The Merchant of Venice. He also performed at the Young Vic theatre.
Dale's television appearances include The Iron Maiden, The Big Job, Carry on Screaming!, Rogue's Gallery, Pete's Dragon, The Spaceman and King Arthur, and The Hunchback. In 2007, he narrates for the ABC series Pushing Daisies
