Jennifer Anne Garner (b. April 17, 1972) is an American actress born in Houston, Texas, to Patricia Ann English, a teacher and William John Garner a chemical engineer. She was raised in Charleston, West Virginia after her father's job with Union Carbide necessitated the move. She is best known in the role of Sydney Bristow on the ABC series Alias.

Garner is the second of three daughters and she developed an interest in ballet at a young age and studied the art for nine years. She attended and graduated from George Washington High School in Charleston and went on to attend Denison University in Granville, Ohio where she studied chemistry before drama drew her interest. She graduated with a degree in theater and moved to New York City to begin her acting career, auditioning for stage roles. She landed an understudy role in the Broadway production of A Month in the Country. Not long after, she moved to Los Angeles to begin her work in television.

Career

Early roles include Sasha, in Danielle Steel's Zoya, Sarah Troyer in the TV movie Harvest of Fire and guest appearances on Swift Justice, Law & Order, and Spin City. She also appeared in the feature films The Player, Deconstructing Harry, Mr. Magoo', and starred in the TV-movie based on the Julie Garwood novel Rose Hill.

In 1998 Garner was cast in the lead role of the drama Significant Others. The series also starred Michael Weatherly and Scott Bairstow. It was canceled after only a month and Garner moved on. She appeared on the series Felicity as Hannah Bibb the former girlfriend of Noel Crane played by Scott Foley. The two began dating later and got married in 2000.

In 1999, Garner made guest appearances on Fantasy Island, The Pretender and Time of your Life a Party of Five spin off that starred Jennifer Love Hewitt. She also appeared in the TV movie Aftershock: Earthquake in New York.

The early 21st century brought higher profile roles and the quick advance of her career. She appeared in Dude, Where's My Car in 2000, Pearl Harbor with Ben Affleck in 2001. In 2001, J. J. Abrams, producer of Felicity, cast Garner in the spy thriller series Alias. The series developed a loyal following an proved to be Garner's breakout role as an action star. Also in 2001, she starred in Rennie's Landing with husband Scott Foley.

Her role in Alias won Garner a Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama and a Saturn Award in 2003 for Best Actress in a Television Series. Garner parlayed her TV success into big screen roles. She appeared in Catch Me If You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio and took on the role of the Marvel Comics character Elektra Natchios in the film version of Daredevil opposite Ben Affleck. She followed up in 2004 with the light comedy 13 Going on 30 and reprised her role as Elektra in the action film Elektra. The move was a flop and panned by critics. On the set of the film she discovered she'd suffered nerve damage in her back caused by stunts she performed for Alias.

In 2006, Garner gave voice to the character of Susy in the animated Charlotte's Web. Other roles include The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Be with You.

Producing

Garner has also ventured into film and television production. She served as a producer on Alias and later formed the production company Vandalia Films with Juliana Janes. The company is named for West Virginia, where Garner is from.

In 2008, Vandalia Films signed a first-look deal with Warner Brothers. The company has several films in development including the remake of the Japanese supernatural thriller, Be With You to be written by Allan Loeb, Arranged, Devil in the Junior League adapted from the Linda Francis Lee novel, The Garden of Last Days adapted from a book by book by Andrew Dubus III and the romantic adventure, 3-Days in Europe. Garner will appear in several of the films.

Personal Life

On October 19, 2000, Garner married Felicity' star Scott Foley. Their marriage did not last and they were officially divorced in March, 2004. She began dating Alias co-star Michael Vartan but they also parted ways. In late 2004, Garner began dating Ben Affleck. The two married in a private ceremony on June 29, 2005. Garner was already pregnant with their first child. Her pregnancy was incorporated into the show and the series took a break so she could go on maternity leave. On December 1, 2005, she gave birth to daughter Violet Anne Affleck. She returned to the set of Alias and the series' final episode aired on May 22, 2006.
