Jane Yolen

Jane Yolen (born February 11, 1939) is a prolific American writer, poet, and editor, the author of over 200 books including science fiction and fantasy for adults, young adults, and children.

Described by Newsweek as "America's Hans Christian Anderson", Yolen won the Nebula Award for her short story "Sister Emily's Lightship" (1997) and her novellette "Lost Girls" (1998). She is also the author of Sister Light, Sister Dark (1988) and White Jenna (1989) (published together as the Books of Great Alta), and Caldecott Medal-winning picture books The Emperor and the Kite (1968, illustrated by Ed Young) and Owl Moon (1988, illustrated by John Schoenherr).

Briar Rose, her 1992 volume in Terri Windling and Thomas Canty's Fairy Tale Series, which uses themes from Sleeping Beauty to tell a story of the Holocaust, won the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature.

Her Young Merlin Trilogy (Passager, Hobby, and Merlin) won the 1998 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children's Literature.

Yolen's historical fantasy novella "The Devil's Arithmetic" (1988) was made into a TV movie in 1999 starring Kirsten Dunst, Brittany Murphy, Paul Freeman, Mimi Rogers and Louise Fletcher.

She won the World Fantasy Award for Favorite Folk Tales from Around the World (1987).

Yolen co-edited the three Xanadu anthologies (1992-94) with Martin H. Greenberg and Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy for Teens (2005) with Patrick Nielsen Hayden.
