James Ursini has co-written and co-edited eleven books with Alain Silver. Among the most notable books is the successful Film Noir Reader series, which is used in many universities as a text; Film Noir; and The Noir Style. He and Alain Silver are considered two of the foremost authorities on the subject of film noir. He has also written The Modern Amazons: Warrior Women On-Screen and The Cinema of Obsession: Erotic Fixation and Love Gone Wrong with Dominique Mainon.

Ursini has contributed articles to numerous film magazines. In addition, he has supplied the commentary for numerous classic film noirs for DVD releases from Fox, Paramount, and Warner Bros. He has a doctorate in motion pictures and has lectured on filmmaking at various colleges in the Los Angeles area, where he works and lives as an educator and writer.
