James Tiberius Kirk is the fictional captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise played by William Shatner in the original Star Trek: The Original Series TV series.

Kirk's biggest claim to fame was his command of the Enterprise on its historic five year mission from 2264 to 2269 and made him a legend in space exploration.

The Captain was known for his clever tactical strategy, his unwillingness to give up or leave a friend behind, his loyal crew, and his many romantic conquests, despite his inability to make these relationships last. Kirk was known best to his two friends, First Officer Spock and his Chief Medical Officer Dr. Leonard McCoy. With the help of this team, Kirk was successful in saving the United Federation of Planets and the planet Earth on several occasions.

The Kirk character, as portrayed by William Shatner, was the heart of the series and helped carry the Star Trek Franchise through six movie sequels to the series. Though populated by many popular characters, Kirk remained Star Trek's "leading man" up until the character's death in the seventh Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Generations. He will always be the Star Trek Captain to which all other Star Trek Captains will be compared.

He has been described by a Klingon this way: "Kirk may be a swaggering, overbearing, tin-plated dictator with delusions of godhood, but he's not soft." (The Trouble With Tribbles)
