James Marsters

James Marsters (b. August 20, 1962) is an American actor born in Greenville, California. He is best known for his role as the vampire, Spike on the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off series Angel. Marsters has been nominated for several awards and won three Saturn Awards for Best Supporting actor for his role as Spike.

Marsters grew up in Modesto, California. He has a brother and a sister. He developed an early love of acting. He attended Davis High School where he participated in theatre before moving on to study at the Julliard Drama School, the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, and the American Conservatory Theatre.

Career

He moved to Chicago and began appearing on stage. His stage roles included Ferdinand in The Tempest at the Goodman Theatre. He also performed as Robespierre in the drama Incorruptible: The Life, Death and Dreams of Maximilian de Robespierre. He moved to Seattle in 1990 and with Liane Davidson, and Greg Musick, formed the New Mercury Theater. He performed in many plays, including Teechers, Antigone, and Misalliance.

Marsters transitioned to television in 1992, making his first TV appearance on the series Northern Exposure. Other early roles include medicine Ball and the series Moloney. Marsters began appearing in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Originally slated to be killed off, he proved too popular to die and he became regular in the series fourth season and when the series completed its seventh and final season, he joined the spin-off series Angel.

Marsters has also appeared th in the film House on Haunted Hill and the movie Strange Frequency 2 and series Strange Frequency. He has also guest starred on the series Andromeda and lent his voice to the animated series Spider-Man: The New Animated Series. In 2005, he appeared on the series Smallville playing professor Milton Fine better known as the Supervillain, Brainiac.

In 2009, Marsters will portray Lord Piccolo in the live-action film Dragonball based on the popular anime series.

Other Work

Marsters has narrated audiobooks for The Dresden Files novel series. He also launched a music career and has performed solo and in bands mainly doing covers of classic folk and rock music. Along with the cast of Buffy, he performed in the musical episode Once More with Feeling, which allowed him to display his singing talents.

He fronted the rock band Ghost of the Robot from 2003 to 2004 and they went on a highly successful tour throughout Europe. They released the CD Mad Brilliant, which featured tracks written and co-written by Marsters.
