James Gunn (b. August 5, 1970, St. Louis, Missouri) is an American director. From an Irish catholic family brimming with lawyers, Gunn defied the family love of the law to take on performing and film making. He began making movies at twelve demonstrating a love for explicit horror. Gunn is the brother of actor, Sean Gunn, political writer, Matt Gunn, producer, Patrick Gunn and author Brian Gunn.
Gunn attended Saint Louis University where he earned his BA in theatre. He earned his MFA in creative writing from Columbia University. Gunn made his screenwriting debut with the 1996 film Tromeo and Juliet. Among Gunn's best known genre films are the 2002 live action film Scooby-Doo based on the classic animated series, the zombie horror film Dawn of the Dead a remake of George A. Romero's 1978 film, and the 2006 horror, Slither.
