James "Jim" Worthington Gordon is a fictional character in the DC Comics comic series Batman. Gordon is the first notable supporting character in the Batman series and has appeared in most variations of the Batman story. In most of them he plays the Police Commissioner who is a friend to Batman and supports his vigilante fight against justice.

James Gordon came to Gotham City from Chicago into the then corrupt Gotham City Police Force. In most portrayals of the charcter during Batman's early years, Gordon holds the rank of Captain in the force. Gordon struggles to do his job while maintaining his integrity. When Batman first appears, he becomes Gordon's only real ally to bring about honorable justice. Slowly, he learns to trust Batman, and by the time he becomes police commissioner, Gordon has accepted Batman's unofficial role in keeping order in his city. There is a mutual respect and friendship between them, and a sense that they can count on each other for certain things. Batman calls him "Jim". One of the few times that Gordon has a real problem with Batman is with his choice to employ the young Robin in his crusade.

When Gordon needs to contact Batman, he uses a searchlight on the roof of police headquarters with a bat silhouette at its center. This is known as the Bat-Signal.

James Gordon has been divorced once and widowed once. His second wife was a member of the force, Lt.Sarah Essen-Gordon. She was killed by the Joker. He has a niece who has become his adopted daughter, Barbara Gordon. Barbara Gordon was once Batgirl, and since she was (also) shot by the Joker and lost the use of her legs, she is now Oracle, the information broker to the superhero community.

It is accepted that Gordon does not know that Batman is Bruce Wayne, though some writers feel that he is too much of a detective not to suspect it. During The Bronze Age of Comics, it was clear that Gordon knew his daughter was Batgirl, but it is not clear that this is true in the current continuity.
