Jake Sisko, played by Cirroc Lofton, is the son of Captain Benjamin Sisko in the Star Trek series Deep Space Nine. He did not join Starfleet in order to follow his passion as a writer.
Jake lost his mother at age 11 during the Borg massacre at the Battle of Wolf 359. His father barely saved him from their wrecked cabin on the U.S.S. Saratoga and fled to escape pods. Jake was not happy with the move to the DS9. He soon met and befriended Nog, a Ferengi boy often in trouble; the two were among only 14 children on the station at the time, mostly Bajoran. The two would later form the Noh-Jay Consortium. Eventualy he decided that a Starfleet life was not for him, and father supported his ambitions to be a writer.
Jake's relationship with his father Benjamin Sisko was one of the many layers that made the rich texture series what it was. Their nurturing and changing father-son relationship was something new to the Star Trek franchise, and made for may memorable episodes and moments. Likewise, his relationship with Nog, the Ferengi boy. The two of themcame from cultures that couldn't be more different. Their friendship was as durable and improbable as Kirk's and Spock's in Star Trek: The Original Series.
Watching Jake come into his own, formulate his life's goals and dreams, watching his relationships develop with Nog and his father, and his eventual coming of age, is one of the things that made this series so remarkable.
