Biography

Jacob first appeared in the episode "Secrets". He offered Sam the opportunity to join NASA hoping that Sam would follow through with her life-long dream of going into space. When Samantha inexplicably rejected his offer in favor of her continued work at Cheyenne Mountain with NORAD on deep space radar telemetry, Jacob was disappointed. His relationship with his daughter and son, Mark, had been strained for a while. Jacob then revealed he had terminal lymphoma and would only live a few months.

Jacob's estimation proved overly optimistic however and he was forced to enter the hospital. Knowing he was dying and not buying Sam's explanation, he requested an explanation from General Hammond about his daughter's top secret appointment but Hammond was unable to give him what he wanted.

After the memories left behind in Samantha Carter by the Tokra symbiote Jolinar of Malkshur lead SG-1 to a Tokra base, the members of SG-1 were asked if they would be willing to become a host to Selmak, whose host was dying. When no one volunteered, Samantha , who'd recently received a message about her father being near death, suggested that her father might want to. She hoped the symbiote would heal his cancer and save his life and that of the symbiote. When the two were blended it created a fragile alliance between the Tau'ri and Tok'ra.

Jacob's primary duties rested with the Tokra but he aided SG1 on several occasions. He proved a great influence on Selmak and as a result the Tokra high council came to believe his loyalties to the Tau'ri were stronger than they were to the Tok'ra. As a result he wasn't privy to the inner workings of the Tok'ra and his ability to pass on information to the SGC was limited.

In "Reckoning, Part 2" Jacob experienced an event he shared with no one at the time. Selmak was dying, but in order to help Sam program the Weapon at Dakara to defeat the replicators, he held on to his symbiote knowing he was risking his life in the process. Soon after, Selmak slipped into a coma and was unable to prevent the release of a toxin typically unleashed when a symbiote dies. Jacob returned to Earth where he died, but not before saying goodbye to his daughter.
