J. Lee Thompson

J. Lee Thompson (b. August 1, 1914 – August 30, 2002) is an Academy Award-nominated English director born in Bristol, England, UK. Thompson may be remembered for the films The Guns of Navarone (1961), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972),Battle for the Planet of the Apes(1973) , and King Solomon's Mines (1985). Thompson was nominated for an Oscar for the war drama Guns of Navarrone which starred Gregory Peck.
Thompson was active in filmmaking and theatre since his teens and had two plays, which he wrote, produced and performed before twenty. He became a success in British cinema with such films as Yellow Balloon and The Weak and the Wicked. With Guns of Navarrone he became an international success. In later years his success and popularity diminished. His final film was the Charles Bronson thriller Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects.
