Plot

John Putnam (Richard Carlson), an author, and schoolteacher Ellen Fields (Barbara Rush), witness what appears to be a meteor crashing to Earth near the town of Sand Rock, Arizona. The two visit the site and John realizes the meteor is, in fact, an alien spacecraft. However, when the craft is covered by a landslide, no one believes Putnam's story and Ellen begins to have doubts about what she really saw.

Several days later, some townspeople disappear and later return behaving oddly. The town's sheriff, Drake, begins to believe that something unusual is occurring and organizes locals to find and destroy the invaders. John goes off on his own, visiting a mineshaft he believes will lead him to the craft.

The aliens prove to be harmless people whose ship crashed after a malfunction. They want only to fix their ship and continue on their way. They temporarily took control of a few humans to get their help, knowing that their appearance would cause much panic. After fixing their vessel, the aliens go on their way leaving the town as it was.
