Ioan Gruffudd (pronounced "Yo-an Griffith", according to Entertainment Weekly) (b. October 6, 1973) is a British actor born in Llwydoed, Aberdare South Wales to Peter and Gillian Gruffud. Gruffud grew up in Cardiff with two siblings, a brother Alun and sister Siwan. Gruffud may be best remembered by genre fans for this role as Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four films.
Gruffud enjoyed and studied music including vocal performance. He later changed his focus to acting and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He made his English language movie debut in Poldark. He had previously appeared on the Welsh soap Pobol y Cwm. In 1997 he appeared in Wilde as John Gray, Oscar Wilde's lover. He followed up with his international debut in Titanic as Officer Harold Lowe.
Beginning in 1998, he took on the role of Horatio Hornblower in a series of films based on the C. S. Forester novels. His other work includes Great Expectations, Solomon and Gernor, 102 Dalmatians, The Gathering, This Girl's life and This Girl's Life. In 2004 he was a series regular on the short-lived series Century City as Lukas Gold and also appeared in the 2004 movie King Arthur. In 2005, he starred in the first Fantastic Four movie and reprised his role in the 2007 sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Upcoming roles include a voice role in 2008's Agent Crush and th drama Fireflies in the Garden.
