Intangibility (literally, the inability to be touched) is a power or facet of some characters to be "out of phase" with the physical world.
Intangible characters have the ability to pass through walls, have handcuffs go through their arms, and have bullets harmlessly transit their bodies.
Typically, while in the intangible state, the character can not affect objects: for example, they would not be able to pick something up. However, it is also commonly portrayed that (if the character voluntarily and temporarily becomes intangible) the character can take objects (often including people) into the intangible state with them, usually if they are touching the object at the time of the "phase out".
Some characters (particularly ghosts) may always be intangible.
Intangibility may also be achieved technologically.
