Initialisms are used in science fiction fandom as short hand ways to refer to work of fiction or long, often used phrases. For example, Star Trek: The Next Generation is often referred to among fans by the initialism "ST:TNG."

Initialisms are not limited to reflecting the title's of fictional works, for example, the word "gafia," is a very common fandom initialism for the phrase, "getting away from it all." The term is used then an active fan decides to take a break from fan activities in order to take care of life priorities in the mundane world.
