Independence Day <span class="SFPTagline"> From SCIFIPEDIA </span>
Independence Day (1996) was directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Dean Devlin & Roland Emmerich, the same team that created Stargate and then went on to do the 1998 remake of Godzilla. When the movie was originally released, it became one of the biggest blockbuster hits of its time, with a domestic box office of more than $300 million and a worldwide gross of over $600 million. It starred, among others, Will Smith (soon to establish a personal reputation for big-opening blockbuster movies on the July 4 holiday weekend), Bill Pullman, and Jeff Goldblum.

Plot SummaryOn July 2, completely without warning, communications systems worldwide are disrupted as a huge, alien spaceship appears in orbit around the Earth and deploys many smaller but still massive ships, which take up position over many of the world's major cities. David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) has observed strange sequences in the radio signals associated with the appearance of the aliens, and believes he has decoded the aliens' methods of communications, revealing their plans for massive attacks on cities around the world. Despite his attempts to warn the president of the United States (Bill Pullman), all hell breaks loose on July 3, when the ships begin destroying the cities over which they have been hovering. Despite assaults from missiles and fighter jets, the ships prove invulnerable to attack because of powerful shields that cannot be penetrated, not even by nuclear explosions. Despite the massive destruction and widespread panic, the president manages to escape with his key advisers, and they flee to a super-secret hideout in the Nevada desert, where they learn that an even more secret group (about which he has not previously been informed) has long been studying the bodies of captured aliens. This group has been trying to understand the samples of alien technology that were captured long ago, the existence of which the American government had been denying for decades. Will Smith plays a fighter pilot who has crashed after one of the city destroyers attacks Los Angeles, and his fighter wing's assault on the destroyer has ended in disaster. He happens to land near where an alien fighter has also crash-landed, and defeats the alien in hand-to-hand combat, capturing the first alien prisoner in this unprecedented war. With the captured ship and his prisoner, he manages to join up with the president and his advisers, who have also been joined by a brilliant computer scientist. The desperate forces contact the remnants of other groups of combat pilots around the world. They plan a coordinated assault on the city destroyer ships, simultaneous with an infiltration of the massive mothership by the Smith and Goldblum characters, flying a revived alien fighter ship. The two believe they can upload a virus that will disrupt the aliens' internal communications and their shields. The plan to fight back against the enslaving aliens is set for the next day and July 4th becomes the day humanity will fight for its freedom. July 4th is once again Independence Day. . . . Cast
