Ian R. MacLeod

Ian R. MacLeod (b. 1956 Solihull, West Midlands, England, UK) is an English author. Macleod attended the Harold Malley Grammar School and later Birmingham Polytechnic where he studied law. Always an avid reader, MacLeod made his first attempt at writing a novel at fifteen, an alternate history work.

After graduating college, he worked civil service ad eventually fell back into writing. For several years he had no success getting his novels sold and began writing short stories. He submitted his work to SF magazines and finally sold his first story to Weird Tales. His first work 1/72nd Scale was nominated for a Nebula Award. For his work in short fiction, MacLeod has been nominated for the British Science Fiction Association Award, and the James Tiptree Award.

His first published novel was The Great Wheel published by Harcourt Brace in 1997. The Great Wheelwon the Locus Award for the Year’s Best First novel. His second novel, The Summer Isles an alternate history novella, won the World Fantasy Award. MacLeod's first short story collection entitled Voyages By Starlight was published in 1997 by Arkham House.
