Plot

In the year 2035, robots have become ubiquitous. They live alongside humans, assisting them with daily tasks. Detective Del Spooner is a rarity in his distrust of robots and as a result, when he draws the conclusion that a robot may be behind the apparent suicide of Robot designer Dr. Alfred Lanning, his suspicions are unwelcome among his colleagues and the company for which Lanning worked. In order to commit murder, a robot would need to violate the Three Laws of Robotics:

  1. A robot may not harm a human
  2. A robot must obey orders from a human provided that such orders do not conflict with the first law
  3. A robot must defend itself unless such behavior conflicts with the first two laws.

Del Spooner believes a Nestor Class-5 robot who calls himself Sonny might be responsible for Lanning's death. His investigation leads him to realize that Sonny, and potentially other robots like him, may be gaining emotions. His suspicions are confirmed when it seems Robots are trying to kill him. He teams up with robotics expert, Dr. Susan Calvin to confirm his suspicions and stop what might be a worldwide holocaust.
