In its narrowest defintion, a human is a being of the species homo sapiens with ancestors who originated on Earth.

Scientists generally would include members of all Homo species (including, for example, Homo erectus) as humans.

In science fiction, the term may be more ambiguous than in common usage.

In fantasy, dark fantasy, and supernatural horror, the term is used to refer to beings that are not supernatural in origin. Humans sometimes in this usage are referred to as the "children of man."
