The Hugo Award (aka The Science Fiction Achievement Award) recognizes excellence in science fiction and fantasy novels, short stories, novelettes, and novellas and related areas in professional publishing, fandom, art, and dramatic presentation, including movies and TV.
The Hugo Award was named in honor of Hugo Gernsback, who is credited with creating the genre of science fiction when he launched the sci-fi magazine Amazing Stories in 1926. The Hugo is also known as the Science Fiction Achievement Award and is given annually by the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS). The Hugos are sponsored by WSFS, administered by the committee of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) held that year, and determined by nominations from and a popular vote of the membership of WSFS. In general, a Hugo Award given in a particular year is for work that appeared in the previous calendar year.
The Hugo Award trophy was co-designed by Jack McKnight and Benedict Jablonski, who based the trophy on a rocket-shaped hood ornament from an Oldsmobile 88. Each Worldcon committee selects the trophy's base design resulting in a unique appearance for each year.
