Hugh Jackman

Hugh Michael Jackman (b. October 12, 1968) is a popular Australian actor born in Sydney South Wales to English parents Chris Jackman and Grace Watson. He is well known in the role of Wolverine in the movie X-Men and its sequels.

Jackman is the youngest of five children. He attended Knox Grammar School in Wahroonga and graduated from the University of Technology in Sydney with a BA in communications. He was introduced to acting after taking a required class to complete his degree. His interest grew and he attended the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in Perth and graduated in 1994.

Career

Shortly after his graduation, he won a leading role in the Australian prison drama Corelli as Kevin Jones where he met future wife, Deborrah-Lee Furness. Other early roles included a recurring role on Snowy River: The McGregor Saga, Paperback Hero, and Erskineville Kings. He also appeared on stage in Beauty and the Beast, Sunset Boulevard and the Royal National Theater production of Oklahoma!. Jackman was nominated for an Olivier award for Oklahoma! and an Australian Film Institute award in the Best Actor category for Erskineville Kings

In 2000, Jackman landed the role of Wolverine in X-Men directed by Bryan Singer and co-starring Famke Janssen, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Jackman, at 6' 2, far exceeded the character's height of 5'3. as a result, creative camera work was required to make him appear shorter and wider. The film was a big success and resulted in a dramatic increase in his profile. Jackman reprised his role in the film's sequels X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. He followed up with Someone Like You with Ashley Judd, Swordfish with X-Men co-star Halle Berry and John Travolta and the time travel romance Kate & Leopold.

In 2002, he performed in a special concert performance of the musical Carousel at Carnegie Hall. He returned to the screen in 2003 with X2, and followed up with Making the Grade, and Van Helsing. He appeared on Broadway in the musical The Boy from Oz as Australian singer/songwriter Peter Allen. He won a Tony Award for his portrayal and an Emmy Award for the televised version in the category Outstanding Individual Performer in a Variety, Musical or Comedy program.

In 2006, He starred in X-Men: The Last Stand, Scoop, The Fountain, The Prestige, and lent his voice to the animated features Flushed Away and Happy Feet. Upcoming roles include A Plumm Summer, The Tourist, Australia, Wolverine and If You Could See Me Now.

Personal Life

Jackman married actress Deborra-Lee Furness in February 1996 after meeting on the set of Corelli. The couple tried to have children of their own, but after suffering two miscarriages, decided to adopt. They have two children, a son, Oscar, and daughter, Ava Eliot.
