Highlander # 2

The Dynamite Entertainment Highlander series takes place after the first movie and puts forth the notion that, while Connor Macleod did indeed defeat the Kurgan, he did not win the Immortal Game.

1986: Surrounded by Soviet military forces, Connor and his friends surrender peacefully while the Kurgan’s Temnotiye super-soldiers observe from a distance. The super-soldier leader notes that our heroes will “play their parts as planned”.

The immortals and Dr. Volkov are taken into KGB custody and held until an interrogator arrives. He takes Tasya first, since she’s connected to the KGB; he then accuses her of causing the Chernobyl accident, stealing a classified file and having her KGB partner killed at the airfield while he waited for Tasya to arrive. The fact that Tasya, Connor and Paul were all carrying swords doesn’t really help her case.

In the holding cell, Paul tells Connor that Tasya is only out to protect herself. As he rests, Connor flashes back to Berlin in 1964, and the covert mission he undertook there.

1964: Connor sneaks into a Soviet-occupied area of Berlin, quietly observing the military activity taking place there. Tasya Desny appears, and the two meet for the first time; she offers to help him with his mission and makes a pass at him, but Connor rebukes her. They’re interrupted by the arrival of Paul Furio, clearly Tasya’s former lover. Paul and Connor have a brief confrontation, but the three immortals find common ground when they sense the presence of a fourth immortal and agree to a truce.

1986: Tasya stages a daring escape from her interrogator. She frees the others and they sneak away into the KGB base’s motor pool to find transportation.

1964: The three immortals sneak into the huge cathedral that is being used by the Russian military as a to-secret project facility. As they enter, they are unnoticed by Dr. Volkov, who is praying for his sins and begging God to punish him and not his family for the things he’s done. Volkov goes into a back room and seemingly disappears by the time Connor and the others get there, but they soon discover a hidden staircase behind a bookshelf.

1986: A super-soldier watches quietly and reports in as he sees Connor and the others boarding a train to Siberia. The soldier is ordered to covertly trail them on the train; he’ll be tracked by his fellows.

1964: Connor is shocked to see the high-tech genetic manipulation facility hidden beneath the church, but he’s even more shocked when he uncovers the identity of the immortal they all felt earlier: it’s his age-old enemy, the Kurgan—and he knows that our heroes have arrived!
