Hero Games Currently owned by DOJ Inc is a Role-Playing game publisher established in 1981 to promote the Superhero Genre RPG Champions.

History

In 1981, Steve Peterson and George MacDonald printed off 1,000 copies of a 64 page superhero role-playing game they had developed and took it to a San Francisco gaming convention. This game, named Champions, sold very strongly and gave them enough cash to start a company.

Over the next 5 years they developed an entire set of modular game rules to cover the gamut of gaming genres, with Fantasy Hero, Star Hero, Danger International, Justice Inc and Robot Warriors. All were based on the same flexible points-based system of Champions, and were collectively known as the HERO system.

In 1986, Hero Games was pretty much acquired by Iron Crown Enterprises who were publishing Rolemaster and Middle Earth Role- Playing. This resulted in a new look for the game books, going to a perfect-bound format, and lasted until 1996.

1996 had ICE taken over by R. Talsorian Games as ICE suffered a financial meltdown. This new merger had the HERO system undergo a full rebuild to a new gaming system called Fuzion. This met with very mixed and poor reviews by the Champions community.

2000 Had Hero Games bought by an online gaming portal called Cybergames, and in 2001 DOJ Inc was formed and bought all current interests in Hero Games. The company was back to it's roots. They discarded the Fuzion system and went back to the familiar Hero system.
