Summary
A pilot, Bulldog, whom Adama abandoned on a mission to the edge of Cylon territory many years ago returns after years of captivity on a base star.
Plot
Galactica prepares for battle when three Raiders jump to the fleet's position. Two Raiders are chasing a third and Starbuck and Kat take out the pursuing ships. The third Raider sends out a radio signal identifying its occupant as Bulldog. Adama orders the vessel escorted to Galactica and its occupant disembarks. DNA testing confirms the man's identity as Lt. Daniel "bulldog" Novacek, a pilot who once served under Adama.
Novacek and Adama tell their story to Roslin, revealing that they conducted a mission together a year before the Cylon's attacked the Colonies. Novacek was shot down during a mission investigating illegal mining near the Cylon armistice line. Novacek successfully ejected and was presumed dead by Adama. He was picked up by the Cylons and imprisoned on a baseship for three years until he finally escaped, and stole a raider.
Roslin suspects the story isn't as it seems. Adama later reveals the true story to his son. Adama was ordered to spy on the Cylons, not renegade miners. Novacek flew a stealth ship over the armistice line hoping to find evidence of Cylon military preparations. When an unknown vessel attacked Novacek, Adama ordered Novacek's ship destroyed by a missile to cover up the spy mission. Now, Adama must face the man he thought he'd killed and he wonders if the failed mission was what provoked the Cylon's attack on the colonies. Tigh reveals the true story to Novacek who was unaware that Adama had ordered his plane shot down.
Starbuck reviews film footage of the Raiders' chase and believes the Raiders following Bulldog deliberately fired their weapons past his Raider. She believes they wanted him to escape. She informs Tigh of her discovery and he determines that the Cylons sent Bulldog back knowing he'd want to kill Adama.
Angry over Adama's betrayal, Novacek attacks Adama but is eventually talked out of doing him any real harm by Tigh. Adama later hands his resignation to Roslin but she points out that the Admiralty used him as a scapegoat. There is no way to be certain what triggered the Cylons' attack.
Novacek is sent off to another ship with a uniform.
On a basestar, Three dreams she's on board Galactica attempting to avoid Marines. When she is shot and killed she awakens in bed with Six and Baltar. She is later seen ordering a Centurion to shoot her and delete all information of the incident. The Centurion obeys and in the moments before she downloads into a new body she experiences memories of New Caprica and a vision of five beings in white robes.
When the other models help her out of the rebirthing tank, she informs her counterpart that "There's something beautiful, miraculous between life and death."
