Hera is the infant daughter of Cylon Sharon "Athena" Agathon and human Karl "Helo" Agathon. Hera is the result of a Cylon breeding experiment and is the first successful human-cylon hybrid. Her birth is considered to be a miracle to the Cylons as all previous attempts at producing a child of two cylons or a cylon and human have been unsuccessful.
Hera was conceived on Caprica when her mother, Sharon, was sent to present herself to Helo as her Cylon counterpart, Sharon "Boomer" Valerii with whom Helo had worked on Galactica. The two eventually fell in love before Helo became aware Sharon was a Cylon. The Cylons believed that love might be an essential component in the successful conception and birth of a Cylon offspring.
Hera was born on Galactica, one month premature and both parents were told she died shortly after birth. She was then given to a foster mother, Maya, to be raised on the orders of President Laura Roslin who continued to keep an eye on her when the fleet settled on New Caprica. Hera was believed to have been lost during the exodus from New Caprica following the failed Cylon occupation of the planet. She was rescued by Number Three and taken aboard a Cylon Base Star where she was taken care of by Boomer.Despite being physically identical to her mother, Boomer was a poor substitute and Hera became ill.
She was reunited with her mother when Boomer informed her counterpart, Athena, that her daughter was alive. Athena and Helo conspired to retrieve their child from the nearby Cylon vessel. Hera immediately recognized her mother as different from Boomer. Athena brought Hera back to Galactica where she received proper medical treatment and was reunited with her father.
