Overview

A stub is a placeholder that invites other SCIFIPEDIA users to expand upon an article. A stub can stand in for a section of a long article or for an entire article. The stub's function is to auto-list itself in a stub category as incomplete and then alert anyone who comes to a stub Article that expansion is needed.

Using a Stub

You can insert a stub when you write or encounter an Article that contains a minimum of information and could benefit from expansion.

When to Use a Stub

You should use a stub whenever you read, or create, an Article that does not contain comprehensive information on the subject at hand. A stub is simply a signal that an Article is not yet complete.

Steps When Inserting a Stub

Once you have evaluated an article and decided that it is incomplete, you should open the edit window and insert a stub template in the article. The template should be the one that is most relevant to the Article itself. For instance, an actor in a TV Series could be listed as a {{TV-stub}} but would probably be most appropriately listed as an {{Actors-stub}}.

What to Do If You Complete a Stubbed Article

After you have worked on a stubbed Article to the point where you think it has enough information to qualify as having well covered the subject at hand, you should finish your editing by removing the stub template from the Article so that it will no longer show the stub notice and will no longer be listed in the stub Category.

Types of Stubs

There are stub templates for each of the fourteen topline Categories as listed down the left-hand side of every page in SCIFIPEDIA: {{Anime-stub}}, {{Art-stub}}, etc. There is also a general stub, {{stub}}, and there are also stubs for some other sub-categories.

Basic Stubs

Creating a Stub

If you're not ready to create a complete Article but there's a topic that you know should be listed in SCIFIPEDIA, you can create a stub Article in the hope that someone else will choose to complete the Article.

  • Choose the name for your Article.
  • Enter the name in the Search box at the top of the page and click "All Instances" to make sure that an Article with a variant name doesn't already exist.
  • Once you're sure that the name is OK, click "Start An Article" (It's in the left-hand column on every page of SCIFIPEDIA.) and enter the name.
  • Once you're in the editing box for the Article, write out the name again with the appropriate bold or italics or bold italics markings.
  • Space down to a blank line and enter the stub template ({{Anime-stub}} or whichever one it should be).
  • Click "Show Preview" and confirm that the stub notice is showing properly.
  • Click "Save Page".

You can now click to the appropriate Category, look up the stub sub-category and check to confirm that your stub has been added to the list.
