Early life

Cain grew up on Tauron and was a child during the first Cylon war. Her experiences during that time shaped her personality and hatred for the Cylons. As a child, during a Cylon attack, Cain witnesses her father's death by mortar fire. She is unable to fulfill her father's request to get her sister Lucy to safety. Running for shelter, her sister falls and is injured and Helena panics and abandons her to hide. She is discovered by a Cylon Centurion but instead of killing her retreats having received orders that the war is over. She later finds her sister's doll but not her sister. The second Cylon attack

The Pegasus was stationed at the Scorpian Fleet Shipyards during the Cylon attack. The ship had been undergoing a three month long overhaul. When the Cylons attacked, Cain ordered a blind FTL jump to save the vessel.

Not long after, Cain discovers her new romantic interest and system's analyst, Gina Inviere, was a Cylon, who used her relationship with Cain to gain command codes from officer Kendra Shaw which she used to grant Cylon's access to Pegasus. The betrayal was cutting and Cain imprisoned Gina, allowing her officers to rape and abuse her.

Over the next few months, Cain and her ship engaged in guerrilla warfare with the Cylons. Cain and her crew later came across a civilian fleet of ships but unwilling to bear the burden of protecting them, she had the ships stripped of useful hardware and personnel leaving them stranded without FTL capabilities or defenses. To ensure their cooperation, she ordered her officers to execute the families of any of the personnel she had requested shot if they resisted. Her orders were carried out by Shaw.

While trailing a Cylon Fleet, Pegasus eventually discovered Galactica and Cain took command of the fleet.

Cain transferred Lee Adama and Kara Thrace to Pegasus and made it clear her objective was fighting the Cylons, not protecting the remnants of humanity. While initially glad to be joined by a new Battlestar, Adama and his crew soon realized Cain's leadership could prove dangerous given her ruthless methods. Stories about her brutality and harsh choices came to light. Cain held a Cylon Number Six copy, Gina, aboard her vessel where she was raped and abused by her officers with Cain's knowledge and consent. One of her officers attempted to do the same to the cylon, Sharon, held prisoner on board Galactica but was prevented from doing so, and in the process accidentally killed, by Galen Tyrol and Karl Agathon.

Cain had both officers court martialed and had them imprisoned on board Pegasus and shortly after, sentenced them to death. The situation led to a stand off against Galactica, when Adama demanded the return of his officers. The standoff came to an end following, Starbuck's return from a recon mission with images of a Cylon Resurrection Ship. Cain promoted Kara to Captain and Pegasus CAG.

Prior to the planned attack on the Resurrection ship, Adama recruited Captian Thrace for a plan to assassinate Cain. Cain also devised her own plan with Jack Fisk to assassinate Adama. Following the attack when both assassinations were to be carried out, neither Cain nor Adama gave the order to carry out the plan.

Cain's command of the Pegasus and her life came to an end when Gaius Baltar aided the captive Cylon agent, Gina, in her escape from the Pegasus Brig. Gina visited Cain's quarters and shot and killed her. Cain was eulogized by Fisk and Thrace.
