Harsh Realm is a science fiction TV series created by Chris Carter. The series debuted in the 1999 fall lineup but proved unpopular and was canceled after airing only three of its nine filmed episodes. The remaining six episodes later aired on the FX Network. The series was inspired by a comic book series by James D. Hudnall and Andrew Paquette. Harsh Realm is a virtual reality scenario designed for military training.
Premise
The constant threat of war and terrorism leads the US Department of Defense to create a virtual reality identical to the real world and with counterparts to real world populations. Using census data, satellite cartography and other information, the creators of Harsh Realm managed to duplicate every individual for their training scenario. Once plugged in, the players must handle a simulated crisis event.
The device went online on October 13, 1995. On noon of that day, in the scenario, a small nuclear bomb was detonated in New York City, instantly killing four million people. Without any previous knowledge, Lieutenant Tom Hobbes enters the training scenario with the objective of killing General Omar Santiago, a high scorer in the virtual world. He comes across other soldiers who have entered the scenario as well as versions of individuals he knows in reality. Hobbes learns from his fellow soldiers that Santiago has hijacked the game and he is one of many soldiers sent to kill him. Santiago is planning a real world terrorist attack that will destroy the real world, leaving only Harsh Realm. Hobbes must defeat the general and find a way to return to his life.
