HarperCollins is an English language publisher headquartered in New York City. The company is a subsidiary of News Corporation. HarperCollins was founded in New York City in 1817 by brothers, James and John Harper. In 1987, Harper & Row was acquired by News Corporation. The corporation formed the worldwide book group after acquiring British publisher William Collins & Sons which published a range of Bibles, atlases, dictionaries, and reissued classics. HarperCollins has publishing groups in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia/New Zealand, and India.
HarperCollins has several divisions including international division in the United Kingdom, Australia/New Zealand and Canada. HarperCollins Children's Books has published the best selling A Series of Unfortunate Events series. The division also won two Quill Books Awards for the twelfth novel in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Penultimate Peril in the Children's Chapter/Middle Grade category and If You Give a Pig a Party by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond in the Children's Illustrated category.
HarperCollins General Books Group has had over one hundred books on the New York Times bestseller list among which are The Pursuit of Happyness, The End by Lemony Snicket, and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.
The General Books group launched HarperLuxe in November 2007. The imprint is dedicated to baby boomers who are more comfortable reading larger print.
