Gwyneth Jones (b. 1952) was born in Manchester, England. She took an undergraduate degree in History of Ideas at the University of Sussex, which gave her a taste for scientific revolutions and societies in phase transition, which still echoes in her work. She’s written more than twenty novels for teenagers, including several ghost and horror stories, mostly using the pseudonym "Ann Halam". These include King Death’s Garden, The Haunting of Jessica Raven, The Powerhouse, Crying in the Dark, Don’t Open Your Eyes, Dr. Franklin’s Island and The Fearman, which won the Dracula Society’s Children of the Night Award in 1995. She also writes highly regarded science fiction and fantasy for adults, including the "Aleutian Trilogy" and the “Bold as Love” sequence. Bold as Love, the first in this series, won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2002. Her short story output is not prolific, but her horror fiction has appeared in several anthologies, including The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror, The Architecture of Fear, Dark Terrors 5 and The Mammoth Book of Vampire Stories by Women. She doesn’t believe in ghosts, but is afraid of them, and she always pays close attention to her nightmares.
