Guillermo del Toro (b. October 9, 1964) is a Mexican director born in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico. He was raised in a devout Catholic household by his grandmother and became interested in filmmaking at only eight years old. He worked on short films and learned about makeup and effects from Dick Smith who'd worked on The Exorcist.
At age 21, del Toro exexcutive produced his first feature film. He worked as a makeup supervisor for ten years and formed the company Necropia. del Toro has worked in Mexican television and taught film. His breakout film was the dramatic horror feature, Cronos starring Federico Luppi and Ron Pearlman. The film won the Saturn Award for Best Genre Video Release, eight Golden Ariel awards, and the Mercedes Benz Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Guillermo followed up the success of Cronos with El Espinazo del diablo or The Devil's Backbone which, like his most recent award-winning film, Pan's Labyrinth, was set in a post civil war Spain. Guillermo also directed the popular English language films Blade II and Hellboy. Upcoming films include Hellboy 2: The Golden Army and 3993.
del Toro is rumored to be among the shortlist to direct Peter Jackson's production of The Hobbit. He also hopes to bring H. P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness to the screen.
