Gregory Albert Benford (b. January 30, 1941 in Mobile, Alabama) is an American author and a professor of physics at the University of California, Irvine since 1971. He is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, was Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University, and, in 1995, received the Lord Prize for contributions to science. Benford has served as an advisor to the Department of Energy, NASA and the White House Council on Space Policy.
Benford earned his B.S. from the University of Oklahoma, and then attended the University of California, San Diego, where he received his Ph.D. in 1967. Benford's research has covered several fields of physics including condensed matter, particle physics, plasmas and mathematical physics and biological conversation.
As an author, Benford has written over twenty novels including Artifact, Timescape and Eater. Benford is probably best known for his Galactic Center series beginning with In the Ocean of Night.
Benford has also contributed to television. He served as a scriptwriter for the series A Galactic Odyssey and also as a scientific consultant to the NHK Network and star Trek: The Next Generation.
