The Green Lantern Corps is a fictional organization that is part of the back story of the comic book superhero Green Lantern. Green Lantern is owned by DC Comics.
The Green Lantern Corps are a group of inter-stellar peace keepers commanded by a group of blue aliens called the Guardians of the Universe. Each Green Lantern has a “power ring” that is powered by green light energy that can do practically anything its wearer wills it to do. Its only vulnerability is that, due to "a necessary impurity in the ring", it cannot affect anything that is yellow. This weakness can be overcome, but only after years of experience. Each Green Lantern Corps member is assigned to a different space sector to keep order. The Green Lanterns extend their protection to 3600 space sectors. At the time Hal Jordan joined, there was an estimated 3600 Green Lanterns in the Corps. Now there are said to be 7200, as there are two officers assigned to each space sector.
The members of the Corps are recruited from all different corners of the galaxy, and come as many different shapes and sizes as their are sentient life forms in the universe. One Green Lantern is a tiny sentient insect, while another is a living planet. The qualifications to be a Green Lantern are many, but most importantly they must have the ability to overcome great fear, have a strong will, and an appreciation of justice and order. Often, when a Lantern falls in battle, the ring automatically selects a replacement on the world he is on. Hal Jordan, Earth's first Green Lantern Corps member, received his ring in this way.
The headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps is the planet Oa, said to be located at the center of the universe. There the Guardians feed the giant central Power Battery. The battery transmits the green energy to the small portable lantern-shaped power batteries that each Green Lantern possesses. They need to charge their power rings every 24 hours on their power batteries to keep them working.
It is a tradition that more experienced Corps members train the new Green Lanterns. Killowog is a Green Lantern from way back, and one of the best trainers of new recruits.
